Dr Chen Wenfu is currently an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a professor and doctoral supervisor at Shenyang Agricultural University, the director of the Rice Research Institute, and the director of the Liaoning Biochar Engineering and Technology Research Centre.
Chen Wenfu is mainly engaged in the research of high-yield breeding and production technology of northern japonica rice. He has created a northern japonica super rice breeding theory and technology system based on indica-japonica rice subspecies hybrids and ideal strains, designed a new strain pattern with large upright spikes and successfully applied it in breeding practice, making China the most successful country in germplasm innovation, strain improvement and high-yield breeding through subspecies hybrids. Breeding China's first upright large spike type super rice Shennong 265, high-quality super rice Shennong 606 and broadly adapted super rice Shennong 9816 and other 25 new varieties, to promote the Northeast Japonica rice planting area, yields and the total output of a substantial increase.
